How to Get Rid of a Mattress

on Martha's Vineyard

First, the thing most people don't know: in Massachusetts, mattresses are banned from the trash. They have to be recycled - so "leave it by the bins" isn't just frowned upon, it's not allowed. Here are your actual options, honestly compared.

Option 1: Transfer station (cheapest, most work)

Your town's transfer station accepts mattresses for a per-piece fee, and box springs count separately. You'll need a vehicle that fits a mattress, a way to load it, and the current hours (see the transfer station guide). If you've got the truck and the back, this is the budget move, and we'll cheerfully tell you so.

Option 2: Retailer take-back (works only sometimes)

Buying a new mattress? Ask whether the retailer removes the old one. Some do on the mainland, but many won't cross to the island, or they hand the job to a freight carrier who won't come into your home. Get the answer in writing before you count on it. If they leave you hanging, that's the gap we fill: new one placed, old one gone, one visit - see mattress removal.

Option 3: Donation (rarely works for mattresses - here's why)

Unlike furniture, most charities can't accept used mattresses for hygiene and liability reasons, even clean ones. A nearly-new mattress might occasionally find a taker through island groups or a direct hand-off, but don't build your plan on it.

Option 4: Have it hauled (easiest, costs money, zero effort)

We come in, carry it out - any floor, any staircase - and make sure it enters the recycling stream, not the waste stream. You don't need to be home, and you'll have a clear quote before we come: text a photo of the mattress and where it lives, and we'll take it from there.

Ready for it to be gone? Photos to (970) 376-8687 - clear quote first, then it disappears.
