What to Know Before You Move
Moving on-island sounds simple until you're doing it: staircases in houses older than the country, dirt driveways up-island, a piano nobody planned for, and no friends free on the day. Island crew vs. mainland mover: how to choose
This is the first real decision, and the honest answer is "it depends":
• A mainland mover charges you portal-to-portal - their ferry crossing both ways, their wait time, and their trip home. That can be worth it for a long-distance move where they're driving the whole way anyway.
• An island crew (like us) is already here. No return-ferry meter, and we know the roads, the historic-district streets a truck can't turn onto in August, and the up-island driveways that turn to soup in mud season.
• Often the smartest setup is a hybrid: a mainland crew or a rental truck for the long haul to the boat, and an island crew for the island leg. See our Moving to Martha's Vineyard guide for how to plan that.
The seasonal housing shuffle (a Vineyard-specific reality)
Year-rounders know this one: many rentals are winter-only or summer-only, so moving twice a year is a way of life here. If that's you, the economical rhythm is often a rental truck plus labor-only help to load and unload - you don't need a full-service move to shift between seasonal places. We time load-outs to your ferry reservation when storage or the mainland is involved.
Protecting a move through an old island house
The silent fear in any move is a broken heirloom or a gouged staircase - and island houses make that harder, with narrow turns, low doorways, and stairs built for people from 1840. What actually protects a move: padding and wrapping the furniture, measuring the tight spots before forcing anything, and knowing when to take a door off its hinges instead of gambling with the railing. Our damage policy is written in plain English (ask and we'll text it before you book), and we're fully insured.

Whole houses, single rooms, apartments, offices, seasonal moves, senior and downsizing moves, heavy single items like pianos and safes (see heavy lifting), and labor-only help when you've got the truck (see moving labor).
How we price a move
We quote after we understand the move — photos of the big pieces and the tricky spots, or a quick walkthrough for a larger home. Then, before anything is lifted, we tell you how it's priced: smaller defined moves are usually one fixed number; bigger or open-ended moves are hourly with a minimum, explained up front. You know the structure before we start, never after. Fully insured.

Should I hire an island mover or a mainland one?
Mainland can win for long-distance; island wins for the local leg and island know-how. A hybrid is often cheapest - see the Moving to MV guide.
How far ahead should I book?
June–September, a week or two (Saturdays go first). Off-season, a few days is usually fine.
Do you bring equipment?
Yes - padding, dollies, and straps for every move.
Can you move just the heavy stuff?
Yes - plenty of our moves are "you do the boxes, we do everything with a back-injury risk."
Do you move pianos and safes?
