How to Get Rid of a Mattress

Start with the thing most people don't know: in Massachusetts, mattresses are banned from the regular trash. They have to be recycled, because the steel, foam, and fabric are all recoverable - so "leave it at the curb" isn't just frowned on, it's not allowed. Here are your real options, honestly compared. Option 1 - Transfer station (cheapest, most effort)

Your town's transfer station takes mattresses for a per-piece fee, and box springs count separately. You'll need a vehicle that fits one, a way to load it, and the current hours (see the transfer station guide). Got a truck and a strong back? This is your budget route.

Option 2 - Retailer take-back (works only sometimes)

Buying new? Ask if the retailer removes the old one. Some do on the mainland, but many won't cross to the island or hand it to a freight carrier who won't enter your home. Get the answer in writing before you count on it.

Option 3 - Donation (rarely works for mattresses)

Unlike furniture, most charities can't accept used mattresses for hygiene reasons, even clean ones. A nearly-new one might find a taker through the island groups, but don't build your plan on it.

Option 4 - Have it hauled (easiest, zero effort)

We carry it out from any floor and make sure it enters the recycling stream, not the landfill. You don't need to be home, and you'll have a clear quote before we come. Doing a rental swap?
