People plan an island move like a mainland move plus a boat ride. It's not. Here's what we've learned doing this professionally, so your move onto (or off) the Vineyard goes smoothly instead of sideways.
The ferry is the whole plan
Everything you own crosses on the Steamship Authority, and vehicle slots - especially truck slots in season - book out well ahead. Reserve the boat before you finalize anything else, build your moving day backward from that reservation, and have a plan for missing it, because a missed boat can mean hours of standby. Summer moves need weeks of lead time; off-season is far more forgiving and noticeably cheaper all around.
Mainland movers vs. island crews
Off-island movers charge portal-to-portal - you pay their ferry crossing, their wait time, and their trip home. Sometimes that's worth it for a long-distance move; often the smarter structure is a hybrid: a mainland crew (or you and a rental truck) to the boat, and an island crew like ours for the island leg - we're already here, we know the roads the truck can't take, and there's no return-ferry meter running.
The great island housing shuffle
Year-rounders know: many rentals run winter-only or summer-only, which means moving twice a year is a lifestyle here. If that's your situation, labor-only moving with a rental truck is often the economical rhythm - and we time load-outs to your boat when storage or the mainland is involved.
Bring vs. buy: the honest list
Bring: quality furniture you love, tools, and anything sentimental - island retail is limited and mainland delivery is its own saga (see how furniture delivery works on MV). Don't bring: cheap bulky stuff that costs more to ferry than to replace, and anything you're storing "just in case," since island storage is scarce and expensive. Buy here: the island's thrift and consignment scene is genuinely good, and we pick up Marketplace finds on both sides of the water.
